about
Back at it 6 months after releasing his debut EP 'Riverrock Baby', Lou Davies is releasing his newest single 'The Smartest Monkey' - the first from an upcoming album planned for release at the end of the year. Although a move away from the jangly 12-string sound, 'The Smartest Monkey' is still grounded in a 60's garage rock sound almost mixed in with a bit of gospel.
The eerie harmonies in the chorus and the fat driving bassline/chunky guitar/spoken word lyrics during the verses create this juxtaposition that keeps you wanting to hear more. Held together by this raw, gritty sound reminiscent of the 1970 album 'Loaded', this tune is catchy and positively contagious.
lyrics
Don't tell me what's right
I know it in my head
I've seen it all before
Are you the smartest monkey?
Oh, my mistake big boy
Stepping on my shoes
On the shoulders of the giants
I'm a peacekeeper, alright
You live to 25 or so years
That counts for something right?
You say "been here, been there, been everywhere man"
Gee, I feel like an old man
Mummy keeps you cozy, Daddy's never nosey
And that's the way it's always been
You little lucky boy
People on my side
Sipping on all lies
Deromantisized, petrified
Am I dead or alive?
Everything's better when everything's wetter
Everything's better when everything's wetter
And I thought you liked me
